Electronic Services Pioneer Mark Johnson Named Chairman of Payment Card Industry Compliance Solutions Provider ControlScan's Board

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) July 6, 2008 -- Mark Johnson, former vice chairman of CheckFree, is joining the board of Internet security and Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance solutions provider ControlScan (controlscan.com) and will serve as the company's chairman.

Johnson is a 25-year financial services veteran. He joined CheckFree, a provider of technology that makes online banking and bill payment possible, in 1982 and was a top executive and board member of the company until he retired in 2007.

As an advisor and community leader, Johnson is intimately familiar with Payment Card Industry solutions provider, ControlScan. He serves on the board of Total Technology Ventures and is a former chairman of the Technology Association of Georgia.

ControlScan, founded in 2005, helps small e-commerce and retail merchants meet the compliance requirements of the Payment Card Industry. ControlScan's growth will, in part, be fueled by the impressive growth in the e-commerce industry. According to the research firm, Forrester, U.S. consumers in 2008 will spend $204 billion online - a 17 percent increase from 2007.

Johnson joined CheckFree before the average consumer even knew what a personal computer was. At CheckFree, he launched one of the first electronic funds transfer services as well as the company's e-bill payment business. In addition, he founded a private investment consultancy focused on early-stage payment technology firms.

Johnson says he was attracted to Payment Card Industry compliance solutions provider ControlScan because of the company's focus on helping small merchants, which have historically been underserved in the security marketplace. The pioneer also says he likes the fact that many of ControlScan's offerings are mandated by the Payment Card Industry, a consortium of creditors that pass compliance rules concerning how merchants must store and transmit customer data.

He adds that another top draw was the recent appointment of Joan Herbig as Chief Executive Officer. "Joan has an uncanny ability to put herself in the client's shoes," Johnson says. "You throw in her leadership and an attractive niche market with an industry mandate and I believe you have a winner. Not to mention that the company's core products are innovative and intuitive. I'm definitely looking forward to helping ControlScan become the market leader in this space."

Herbig says Johnson's experience in the e-commerce industry - seeing it emerge in the early 1980s to what it is now - will be invaluable. In addition, she says, Johnson's business acumen will help ControlScan. At CheckFree, he was instrumental in growing it from a startup to a profitable enterprise which posted $973 million in revenue in 2007.

Johnson began his career at the Federal Reserve Bank in Cleveland. He lives near Atlanta with his wife and three children.
