Prostate Cancer Sufferers May Soon Be Able To Enjoy A Chemo Holiday

When prostate cancer moves out of the prostate and spread into other parts of the body it is classed as advanced prostate cancer and treatment becomes much more difficult than when the disease is limited to the prostate gland.

As long as prostate cancer has not spread too widely and is not especially aggressive it is still possible not just to treat it but in fact to cure it. In many cases however where the disease is widespread, or is too aggressive, treatment becomes a case of simply slowing the progress of the disease and providing you with the best possible quality of life.

Presently one of the main treatments for cases of advanced prostate cancer is intravenous chemotherapy often using a drug called docetaxal. This is a very effective drug treatment for a lot of patients and it does indeed slow the progress of prostate cancer and extend the life of many patients. Nonetheless, it is not without its side effects which include things like nausea, hair loss, loss of appetite and a greater risk of infection. It is here therefore that we meet one of the biggest difficulties in advanced prostate cancer treatment.

When you are treating a disease which cannot be cured and which will kill you sooner or later, then lengthening your life by holding back the progress of the disease is good as long as that treatment gives you an acceptable quality of life and does not leave you with the feeling that the treatment is worse than the condition itself.

For a lot of prostate cancer patients, who are normally in their 60s or older, chemotherapy is far from pleasant but it is a price worth paying when they first start their course of treatment. However, as time goes by and the side effects start to build the picture often alters and a lot of patients soon begin to ask whether or not it is all worth it. Naturally this is never an easy question to answer and must be the subject of a very personal discussion between the patient, his family and his physician.

Most of us are familiar with this scenario either through our own personal experience with illness or from our experience of seeing a family member of close friend in this situation and will know well just how difficult a time it can be.

Now, however, there may be a bit of light at the end of this tunnel because studies involving a sizeable group of patients with metastatic prostate cancer show that a lot of patients may be able to take a 'chemotherapy holiday' without significant damage to their treatment. Put another way, following several weeks of chemotherapy, and when the side effects are really beginning to get you down, you may be able to simply stop your chemotherapy for a time and let your body recover a little before going on with your treatment.

It is of course early days yet and no-one is exactly certain yet about exactly how long a 'chemotherapy holidays' might be or how often you can take them, but for a significant number of advanced prostate cancer patients this apparently small advance in treatment could make a world of difference.
